About the Project

Data Smog is a visualization of some of the real-time data representing the city of Los Angeles. The buildings are built from the five tags most frequently and most recently associated with L.A. on the photo-sharing site Flickr. The more frequent the tags, the higher the building. The current weather conditions are reflected in the sun, moon or cloud in the sky. The drifting smog is composed of Flickr comments pulled from photos associated with L.A. The more comments there are on recent photos, the more the smog obscures the view.

Data Smog looks best in the Firefox or Safari web browsers, ideally at a 1024x780 resolution or higher.

The page may take some time to load initially, and then it will refresh itself automatically every 30 seconds or so.
