I was the sound designer for an installation by artist Mario Rizzi at the 2004 Biennale of Sydney and the Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto (MART) in Italy. The installation recreated the studio of Carl Jung, haunted by the voices of Jung, his rival Freud, and Sabina Spielrein, Jung’s one-time patient, sometime colleague, and possible paramour.

Spacialized sound is an evocative but seldom-used storytelling device. The effect of disembodied voices was achieved using Holosonic speakers, which directed sound in distinct beams throughout the space. Fellow designer Michael Schneider created sensors to affect the clarity of sound based on the user’s proximity to objects in the room.
